PBC0060: empowerment

PBC 60 expresses the joyful sense of empowerment Bolsheviks gain from picturing a re-united Russia under their newly formed government. Major geographical features such as the Neva river, the Ural Mountains in the middle, and Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia demonstrate Russia’s physical vastness as an emblem of new empowerment (W257, W572). In some instances, Russia is imagined as a new land, even an island, to which one is sailing (W195, W196). The Soviet Union is a paradise of diversity and opposites, of village and city factory, of beautiful flowers and cold steel, under the unifying banner of the Bolsheviks (W174, W390). In all instances “Russia” and Russians are on the move.
